VALLARTA SUPERMARKET on North Broadway in Santa Maria added at ♦♦♦ Yes you read that right, have been meaning to try for several years and am happy to include it in some of the finest taqueria-fare on the central coast. It is the BEST ‘marinated-style’ (non-rotisserie) al Pastor in Santa Maria. Meat is high-quality and a good color. Marinade is perfectly-integrated and rich in pineapple. Salsa selction second to none. Everything is perfect, and the tortillas fresh.
CORONA’S in Arroyo Grande added at ◊◊ End of conversation.
PAPI’S GRILL in Pismo Beach upgraded to ♦♦♦ I have now eaten there three times and it appears the bugs have been worked out and the tacos are still spectacular. Purists will point out how unfair this inclusion is because there is no al Pastor or Adobada on the menu. Locals or astute followers will notice there are THREE taco establishments on the Taco-List which are ‘non-traditional’–two of which perform miserably. Papi’s Grill really pulls it off in grand fashion. The Chipotle Asada taco is fairly close to heaven.
TORTILLERIA MEXICO on South Broadway in Santa Maria downgraded to ♦♦ Several recent visits have been disappointing and the addition of Vallarta makes the short-comings even more glaring. Still the best in South Santa Maria.
